It is nerve wrecking to find that still indiscriminate loot of Bengal treasury is found. Time has punished two looter states UK and USA as they are struggling for their survival. It was way back 1941 during the war of world war SS Gairsoppa was steaming home from India while in the service of the Ministry of War Transport when she was torpedoed by a Nazi U-boat. She sank in icy seas more than three miles deep about 300 miles south west of Ireland. Of the 83-member crew, a mixture of British and Indians, only one survived. The 32 who managed to scramble onto lifeboats were machine-gunned by the Germans.Only one of her 84 crew survived. The ship, recognisable by the red-and-black paintwork of the British-India Steam Navigation Company and the torpedo hole in its side, was sailing in a convoy from Calcutta in 1941. A single torpedo from U-101 sank her in 20 minutes, on February 17, 1941. The ship was part of a convoy headed for Liverpool, but it went down about 300 miles southwest of Ireland, disappearing in icy waters nearly three miles deep, deeper than the resting place of the Titanic. Divers say they have found the wreck intact and they estimate its cargo at up to 240 tons of silver — a trove worth more than $200 million. Part of the 240 tonnes of silver on board was in the form of bars containing 2.4 per cent gold, which the salvage company has hailed as “an added bonus”. Apart from gold7 silver ship carried “with nearly 7,000 tonnes of diverse medium and high-value cargo, including pig iron, tea, general cargo.

Now whose treasure is this ?  Britain’s legal claim to 7 million ounces of silver worth £150 million (Rs 1,150 crore) found in the wreckage of a British cargo steamship is being challenged by Indian historians who say the treasure belongs to India. We have seen in current days UK is not being able to provide jobs for its citizens and that is why riots are breaking up.US President is pleading regularly to get his job bill passed. They desperately need other source of income. So do we. why will we let our treasures to be enjoyed by other nationals? Company says, under the terms of a contract, Odyssey Marine will take the lion’s share — 80 per cent — of the value of whatever is salvaged, while the British government will get only 20 per cent. Converted to Indian currency, it will mean Rs 230 crore.This is because Odyssey Marine, which won the exploration rights through open tender, “has taken all the risks”, the spokesperson pointed out. Odessey,is  adamant movers, In 2008 a U.S. judge ordered the firm to hand back gold and silver coins worth £300million to Spain, which said the treasure was taken from a frigate that sank in 1804. Odyssey said the wreck’s identity was unclear and had been found in international waters

Whereas If the cargo is brought up intact, according to a spokesperson for the department of transport in London, “the silver belongs to the British government”.. They never said that they are ashamed,those are part of loot and entire amount should go to India.

.Historian Madhusree Mukherji, author of the controversial book Churchill’s Secret War, alleged in The Telegraph, that Britain’s wartime Prime Minister was responsible for aggravating the worst effects of the Bengal famine, wants scrutiny of Britain’s legal entitlement.“There is a lot more to this than meets the eye,” was her initial reaction.She also said  “My best guess is that the British banks in Calcutta and possibly the Bengal treasury as well emptied out their coffers, and this was likely done in great secrecy. Why they did this at that point ?

In The telegraph ,London-based historian Kusoom Vadgama, who has covered the war years in three books on the UK-India relationship, including India in Britain, believes that on moral and legal grounds “the silver belongs to India” — and that the Indian government should press its claim.

But what have we done.Our PM and 2^nd man Pranab Mukherjii both of whom has Kolkata connection and both of whom ere in US when the news first published by New york times( http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/26/science/26shipwreck.html ) on 25.9.We have not bothered the issue of Odessey Marines to recover the huge loot. We have  Chief Minister who is the second largest constituent of UPA and rules Bengal as well. Why UK and USA will enjoy Indian treasure. Is it too much for us to demand to bring back national wealth to our coffin.
